The Walking Dead Comic-Con@Home Panel -- Highlights and Everything You Need to Know for the Season 10 Special Event

The Walking Dead Season 10 is returning soon -- and that's not all. At The Walking Dead Comic-Con@Home panel, the show's cast and creators announced the Season 10 Special Event will air Sunday, October 4 at 9/8c, and there will be six extra episodes of Season 10 in 2021!

In the hour-long panel, TWD Universe Chief Creative Officer Scott M. Gimple, Showrunner Angela Kang, Executive Producer Greg Nicotero, and stars Norman Reedus (Daryl), Melissa McBride (Carol), Lauren Cohan (Maggie), Josh McDermitt (Eugene), Seth Gilliam (Gabriel), Ross Marquand (Aaron), Khary Payton (Ezekiel), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan), and Paola Lazaro (Princess) previewed the rest of Season 10, reflected on what's happened thus far, and shared inside information on what's to come.

After showing an extended preview of the Season 10 Special Event, which includes the return of Lauren Cohan as Maggie, a new masked and armed character, and Beta leading a screaming horde, Greg Nictotero, who directed the episode told the panel "the last five minutes of the episode just take you other place." It promises to be epic.

According to Kang, Beta is in his element surrounded by the dead. "That's the closest thing he has to a screaming fan base," she said.

"I love the last few shots of Episode 15, where you see Beta with the thousands of walkers advancing," added Nicotero.

Additionally, the stars broke down where their characters stand as the the season heads into its final phase. Norman Reedus says it's been a time of extreme growth for Daryl: "There was a lot of trust issues he was a having... it was like a friend having multiple nervous breakdowns and acting on them... with Michonne leaving... he's trying to play daddy."

Highlight: Daryl As Dad

But according to Reedus, just because it's hard doesn't mean Daryl will ever abandon his adopted family. "I think he's the kind of character who's always going to be there," said Reedus.

That said, host Chris Hardwick asked the question on many fan's minds: does Daryl want a rematch with Beta? Based on the trailer, it certainly looks like he may get his opportunity. While Daryl is always ready for a fight, Reedus made it clear he's not as anxious for action against a big man like Ryan Hurst, the actor who plays Beta.

"He's a big guy. I think he'd like to shoot him in the ass with an arrow from far away. Just me personally Norman... there's that come get it thing we joke about, but I took a lot of Excedrin the day after that first fight," Reedus told Hardwick.

Reedus isn't going anywhere and that's probably a good thing. With Rick and Michonne gone, many fans are understandably anxious about the safety of Judith and RJ. But Gimple allayed those concerns during the panel: "If you look at Judith's history of parent's and guardian, they're the ones in danger."

Highlight: Is Judith in Danger

As Judith's latest guardian, Daryl may want to watch out. While Daryl's relationship with Judith has never been on stronger ground, according to McBride, Daryl and Carol have never been shakier. Asked about their relationship she could only muster an, "ehhhhh."

"They start from that point and they have along way to go," she elaborated.

As for Carol's old lover, Ezekiel, he finds himself in an interesting place as Season 10 nears its conclusion. Khary Payton told the panel Ezekiel feels "there are definitely aspects of his life that he wants to leave behind. He's got failed relationships... he's built a community and seen it all get kind of toppled. He's looking for a fresh start. He's also a guy who's got a clock on it. He's got that ticktock in his brain that says he's not long for this world, and in a world where nobody's got much time, he feels like he has even less because he's dealing with his cancer and he's gonna fit his bucket list in someway, somehow."

Ezekiel won't be the only character dealing with a changing world when Season 10 returns. Negan, for one, will have to deal with the return of Lauren Cohan's Maggie, whose husband he murdered. As always, Negan will have to walk the the tightrope of who he was and who he is trying to be, Jeffrey Dean Morgan explained.

Highlight: Will Maggie Kill Negan

"Negan has gone through such a journey the last couple years. This redemption arc has been amazing, and yet we know that in there is Negan and I don't think that will ever go away. So he's gonna be walking a fine line, especially with Maggie," the actor said.

But what could help save Negan from the dark might be... kids. "Negan definitely has a soft spot for the younger generation," said Morgan.

While that may be the thing that saves Negan, as his relationships with Judith and Lydia have before, Gimple admitted during the panel he knows what a Negan-less world would look like.

Hardwick asked what would've happen if Rick and Michonne had killed Negan rather than put him in prison, and Gimple had his answer ready to go... and it sounds like a wildly different TWD: "We talk about the butterfly effect a lot... we showed it with Michonne's last episode. The conflicts would've been different with the community. They probably would've been more intense in Season 9. Maybe Rick would be dead? Maybe that herd would've run through one the communities. Maybe that would've created more conflict and then maybe The Whisperers would've come in and wiped them all out because they couldn't get it together... but not before Lydia killed Alpha, which is a whole story that played out in my head."

Beyond fun counterfactuals, the cast and creators previewed the exciting story to come during the rest of Season 10, including Eugene's search for Stephanie, of whom Josh McDermitt says, "They have similar interests... she laughs at his weird references. I think he's excited about moving forward with someone who's a little bit more like-minded."

Finally, Angela Kang revealed that the Commonwealth, a community well-known to TWD comic fans will join the show at some point, and previewed what she's most looking forward to.

"I'm excited for people to see what happens with Beta, what happens with Carol... and her revenge arc, Daryl and his leadership role..."
