"What Am I Becoming?" These Are Diana's Key Character Shifts

Season 2 of A Discovery of Witches sees Diana Bishop dig deep and get pretty existential—and she has every reason to do just that given what she faces. Her new life in Elizabethan London could be considered a rite of passage, considering all the major questions it raises for her. From meeting the old world version of her Matthew, to finally meeting his infamous father, Phillipe, Diana also struggles to understand who she can and can't trust. She's forced to do things that she never imagined herself doing. And amongst all of these newfound discoveries and battles, it's no surprise that in the latest episode, she turns to Matthew and asks, ‘What am I becoming?’

So let's take a look at Diana's key character shifts, and map the moments that led to them.

Warning, this post contains spoilers!

Matthew is completely different in 1590

Diana’s timewalk with Matthew is a lot like visiting a partner's old hometown where they've left all their demons behind (literal demons in Matthew's case). Diana has to face Matthew Roydon, who, let’s face it, wouldn’t have been the right guy for her if they met in 1590. For starters, there's the huge red flag that he hated witches. By facing Matthew circa 1590, Diana has to ask herself: am I the right witch for this witch-hating vampire in the past, present, or future?

Meeting her tough-love mentor

Imagine having power for years and not being able to fully use it. When Diana arrives to 1590, she knows the first thing she needs to do is get a grip on her power so they can find 'The Book of Life' and get back to present day. To do this, Diana needs a teacher. Thankfully she finds her mentor, Goody Alsop. She doesn’t take her on an easy journey, but she does ignite Diana's powers. When Goody labels Diana’s introduction to her as a ‘prophecy,' Diana can’t help but feel the pressure. Then, Diana learns she's a weaver, the kind of witch that can actually create their own spells. More power, more problems.

Meeting Queen Elizabeth

Meeting the Queen is always a big deal, but meeting a Queen from the past and one who has major matriarchal power over your boyfriend must be a lot to digest. Diana handles it well externally, but internally it's clear she's questioning her newfound position in Matthew’s life.

Dinner with the Father-in-Law

In a much more serious 'meet the parents' situation than we're used to, Diana’s first encounters with Matthew’s father are rife with tension. Phillipe can see right through Diana. Within minutes of meeting them, he knows that they have timewalked from the future, and haven’t had intimate relations. Nothing makes you question your relationship more, then when your boyfriend's own father is poking holes in it. Facing Matthew’s confrontational and interrogative father, reveals a few more of Matthew's inner demons.

Diana must weigh the pros and cons of Matthew's illness, blood rage. You know, the illness that can cause vampires to act violently and impulsively, driving them to murder even when they don't actually want to. There is hope, however, if a vampire is provided with a supportive environment (another weight on Diana’s shoulders), their blood rage can calm. There is one benefit to Matthew's illness: weaver witches and vampires with blood rage can conceive. This is because Diana possesses a demonic strand in her blood. I’m sure just reading this you’re having to take a breath or two for all of this information to settle in. Now, imagine how Diana is feeling.

The discovery of her murderous side

In the past, Diana's powers have been pushed. Though, aside from having to fight off Matthew's ex in Season 1, most of the pushing has been done by people she knows and loves. That changes when she gets to 1590, where there's no one safe in sight, even when at the home of Matthew's father. Here, a man comes to visit Diana because he wants to see her memories. But after a while, it feels like he's trying to take them. As Phillipe watches on and does nothing, Diana fights back until there's no more fighting to be done. And this murderous side does not come without shame.

As you can imagine, any of these intense moments could be a turning point in someone's life. Now add to that the incredibly short timeframe of events, and the fact that they've timewalked—it's a lot to handle. Diana's former self is shed before our very eyes, as she's forced to carry the weight of everything that's thrown at her this season. We can't help but empathize and wonder: what would we do in her place?
