When It Comes to John Wayne, Picking the Best Means Arguing Over Westerns and War Pics

John Wayne’s no one-trick pony. Look at his filmography, and you’ll see he’s a master of two genres especially: the Western (The Searchers, McLintock!, True Grit) and the war pic (In Harm’s Way, They Were Expendable, The Longest Day). So what happens when you compare the two types? Is comparing The Green Berets to She Wore a Yellow Ribbon like comparing apples to oranges? Regardless, in’s online polls, Rio Bravo currently ranks as Wayne’s best Western, while Sands of Iwo Jima stands on top for war flicks. Now the time has come to decide which is better. (Unless, of course, another pic — like his boxing flick, The Quiet Man — rates number one.) This weekend, check out some of the contenders when Rio Bravo and five other John Wayne movies are broadcast during AMC’s final John Wayne Saturday. The movie marathon starts with North to Alaska on Sat., Aug. 28, at 9:15AM | 8:15C. Then go online and vote.
