You’re About to Experience Another Outbreak of Rambomania

Rambo may have been a lone wolf, but he gained a fantastic following. When First Blood hit theaters, in 1982, it became one of Sylvester Stallone’s biggest non-Rocky hits. Then, when Rambo: First Blood Part II was released, in 1985, the character and movie became cultural phenomena. The macho commando and his ability to fight the Red menace coincided perfectly with the eighties Zeitgeist. Soon Rambo was the poster boy for Ronald Reagan (or, as he came to be called, Ronbo) and the Republican right. Fans couldn’t get enough of the patriotic action hero: to stay healthy, they took Rambo vitamins; to send a message, they used Rambo-grams. Some even went so far as to purchase $150 replicas of his high-tech bow and arrow. Do you remember all the ways the super-soldier infiltrated pop culture? First Blood and Rambo: First Blood Part II are showing from Mon., Apr. 26, through Mon., Apr. 30th, at 8pm and 10pm, respectively, on AMC.
