Sidekick? Backup? Right-hand man? Meh. Hollywood’s greatest fighting machines go it alone. Why is victory so much sweeter when a hero battles solo? Part of it is the sheer odds: John McClane, in Die Hard, clobbers Hans Gruber and his gang of goons, while Jason Bourne single-handedly takes down an entire network of assassins. Part of it also has to do with the thrill of watching brilliant strategies unfold (e.g., duct-taping firearms to your back). Brawn and gunpowder help, but, when you’re an army of one, wit goes a long way.
