Mastering the Art of the Great Escape (Not Necessarily on Motorcycle)

With Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island coming out soon, we’ve noticed that movie heroes have a tendency to get into impossible binds — and the more impossible the bind, the more riveting the escape. In The Shawshank Redemption, Tim Robbins is trapped in a high-security prison. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker and company are entrenched in the bowels of the Death Star. Then there’s The Great Escape, in which Steve McQueen and his fellow POWs are held captive in a Nazi prison camp. Cinema’s best escape artists wow you with their determination and genius, turning a doomed situation into a miraculous feat. (Of course, a little showmanship doesn’t hurt, either.)
