The Newsdesk 08.27.09 – Spielberg to Tackle Final Crichton; First Look at Weaver in Avatar

The creators of Smallville are teaming up with Michael Bay for the scifi movie I Am Number 4, based on the book co-written by author James Frey (A Million Little Pieces). This project has a lot not going for it right now.

• Steven Spielberg might direct an adaptation of the late Michael Crichton’s posthumous novel, Pirate Latitudes. Spielberg tackling pirates? Did Hook teach him nothing?

• The first images of Sigourney Weaver in Avatar have surfaced. Well, Sigourney as a weird blue alien thing, to be precise.

• Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, and Lionsgate have all agreed to make their movies available for the download-to-own DivX digital media format.

• Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, and John Leguizamo have signed on for the indie thriller Vanishing on Seventh Street. Hopefully Hayden can earn back the indie cred he got with Shattered Glass, and then promptly lost with Jumper.

• Creepy new photos of Bruce Willis in The Surrogates have been released. Of course, the creepiest part is seeing Bruce Willis as a blonde.

Invincible director Ericson Core will direct Vin Diesel in xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage. Oh, so that’s Diesel’s name in the xXx movies? Three movies in, we had no idea.
