We all know the truth hurts. In The Invention of Lying, a loser named Mark (Ricky Gervais) experiences that hurt pretty much all the time. No detail is spared in his life: His date (Jennifer Garner) points out he’s not much to look at; his assistant (Tina Fey) openly despises him. All this truthfulness stems from the fact that he lives in a society founded on absolute honesty. And then Mark stumbles upon something novel: Lying! In short time, he’s using it to every advantage in a universe where people have no idea falsehood exists. Gervais is his usual deadpan hilarious; Garner and Fey are not far behind. Why would a trailer lie to us?
