Horror Power Ranking – November 3, 2008

It’s the week after Halloween, and our thoughts have turned from scary ghosts and goblins, to the more frightening prospects of Election Day (which, by the way, would be a great title for a horror movie). So we’re seeing a lot of old favorites on the list, like Friday the 13th (taking the top slot); returning friends, like Repo! (finally  in theaters); and even a few missteps, like the awful, awful Haunting of Molly Hartley. You can vote on Tuesday, but the decisions for the Horror Power Ranking only rest with one man, so let’s get to it:

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie
1 2 friday13th-75x75.jpg Friday the 13th
I may still be ODing on the weekend’s candy, but I think Friday the 13th is looking better and better with each day. It’s been a long time coming, but at least for the week after Halloween, let’s put Jason up top.
2 8 sawv-75x75.jpg Saw V
Jigsaw is the now the most profitable movie slasher of all time. They said torture porn would be a passing trend, and maybe it was, but the Saw series has persisted. It’s jumping up six slots because it’s Jigsaw’s world, we’re just trapped in it.
3 splinter-75x75.jpg Splinter
A nice contrast to the complicated motivation of our friend Jigsaw is the monster in Splinter. It’s a nasty, fun little horror movie, and our reviewer liked it a whole lot. So what are you waiting for? Go see it… If you can find it.
4 5 lettherightonein-75x75.jpg Let the Right One in
The mainstream media is starting to catch up on what we’ve known for a while now: LTROI is probably one of the best movies of the year. It continues its slow climb up the list, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit number one soon.
5 repo-the-genetic-opera-75x75.jpg Repo! The Genetic Opera
After a long, torturous trail to the movie theater, Repo! is finally being released this Friday. Though the studio dumped it, the director, cast, and crew have waged an effective viral campaign for the movie. We’ll see if it pays off at the box office.
6 house-75x75.jpg House
Also being released this week, and somewhat sillier looking, is House. Throwing every “evil house” cliche into the mix, four young hotties go up against an evil “Tin Man.” If we’re lucky, it falls into the “so bad it’s good” category.
7 3 fearsofthedark-75x75.jpg Fear(s) of the Dark
I want to keep emphasizing that Fear(s) of the Dark’s slow decline down our list has nothing to do with its quality. If you haven’t caught it yet, head over to your local movie theater, and… Well, if you’re not in LA or NYC? Complain.
8 6 billnighy.jpg Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
It drops two slots, as the initial excitement has faded, but you don’t need to ask me twice to see a new Bill Nighy movie. You do need to ask me several times to see a new Rhona Mitra movie, and I might ask you to remind me who exactly she is.
9 twilight2-75x75.jpg Twilight
Oh man, oh man, oh man. Only two weeks until the Twilight-mageddon. If I’m so excited though, you might be wondering: Why is it ranked so low? Well, my friends, that’s because I’m utilizing sarcasm.
10 the_haunting_of_molly-75x75.jpg The Haunting of Molly Hartley
More like The Sucking of Sucky Suckley. I made fun of House for using every cliche in the book; Molly Hartley clearly never read that book, and thinks it’s writing a new book, The title of that book? “I Suck,” by Molly Hartley.
