SciFi Power Ranking – October 13, 2008

Your Power Ranker has been in Spain for the past week. I still am as I type this. And do you know what the best part of that is?  I have not yet set foot in a nation where Beverley Hills Chihuahua tops the box office.  Seriously, people, I go away for a week and the country goes straight down the toilet.  And the tumult doesn’t end with the tiny, irritating dog. Oh no … Heroes continues to bleed viewers at a ferocious rate, there are rumblings of doom for Chuck and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, neither of which rarely make these rankings because nobody watches them.  But it’s not all doom and gloom. Nope. Lots of good things afoot, too …

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie, Show or Comic
1 1 Watchmen.jpg Watchmen
New footage, more press screenings and all around happy feelings. Alan Moore may continue to be a cranky old sod but Zak Snyder’s Watchmen stays at the top of the heap. Some are already declaring it the movie of 2009. Why disagree?
2 bravenewworld.jpg Brave New World
Though it’s not really news at this point the fact that Ridley Scott has finally gone on record to confirm that he is, indeed, adapting Brave New World — a classic in every sense — has triggered the digital equivalent of dancing in the streets.
Also not really news is that Scott Peters (The 4400) has been developing a relaunch of the quintessential 80s scifi TV series. What is news is that ABC has just picked it up, which means the skin-peeling, hamster-eating goodness returns next year. Glee!
4 Alice75.jpg Alice in Wonderland
The cast keeps getting better.  Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter will join Johnny Depp for Tim Burton’s trip down the rabbit hole. We’re predicting this to be one of Burton’s biggest hits at the box office.
5 lovely_bones75.jpg The Lovely Bones
Remember when Peter Jackson was telling us The Lovely Bones would be a refreshing return to small filmmaking after The Lord of the Rings? So why is post-production dragging on forever? At least, there’s finally some chatter. Perhaps the end is in sight.
6 10 life-on-mars.jpg Life on Mars
The big hit in Britain is now a big hit in the US as Life on Mars scores the top debut ratings of any new TV show this Fall.  The big test: Can it stretch its premise over a much-longer American television season?
7 9 cityofember75.jpg City of Ember
You know, the buzz for this one is starting to sound less like PR shill and more like genuine enthusiasm.  Could City of Ember be a hit?  It’s starting to look that way …
8 Astroboy.jpg Astro Boy
The little robot boy is arguably the most influential characer in the history of anime. Well for his big screen adventures, he’s got two new voices. Most will key in on Kristen Bell but I’m personally happier to see Little Britain‘s Matt Lucas making the mouth move.
9 tenth-doctor-who-785475.jpg Dr Who
Yeah, it’s just for the Christmas Special — so far, anyway — but everyone’s favorite Time Lord has got a new companion which means that the “She might end up being okay but she’s not Rose” griping can now commence.
10 GreenLantern75.jpg The Green Lantern
This might be one of the more intriguing comic-to-screen adaptations going. They’ve certainly landed themselves an intriguing star in Ryan Gosling.  That type of casting catapults it into the ten-spot. (In short, it’s worth mentioning.)
