Horror Power Ranking – October 20, 2008

Think of this week as the calm before the storm, aka Halloween. With that in mind, the movement on this week’s list is minimal: The stunning looking Fear(s) of the Dark moves into the top slot, and Twilight continues to be buzz-worthy. Meanwhile, AMC Fearfest is just right around the corner:

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie
1 3 fearsofthedark-75x75.jpg Fear(s) of the Dark
I’ve been talking for weeks about how excellent this animated horror anthology looks, and with a few short days until it opens (Oct. 22), this fun Web Stalker interview with Charles Burns keeps the fear stoked.
2 4 lettherightonein-75x75.jpg Let the Right One In
With every bit that leaks, this Swedish vampire movie has me more and more excited, and that’s why it moves up to the number two spot. It looks like 30 Days of Night , done right.
3 1 fearfest08-75x75.jpg Fearfest ’08
At the risk of offending my AMC patrons, I’m knocking down Fearfest two slots. Not because it’s any less exciting, but because next week, FearFest takes over the charts, and the channel. So I think a little break is in order.
4 dragmetohell-75x75.jpg Drag Me to Hell
Slightly less buzzy, but still worthy, is Sam Raimi’s return to low budget horror, Drag Me to Hell. Starring Allison Lohman, Justin Long (a horror vet from Jeepers Creepers), and Adriana Barraza, it’s not out until next year, but I’m so there.
5 5 sawv-75x75.jpg Saw V
Appropriate to hold Saw V at number 5, right? We’re managing our expectations for the movie, hence the mid-spot, but TV commercials are certainly fueling rumors that the filmmakers have *spoiler* figured out a way to bring Jigsaw back to life.
6 2 quarantine-75x75.jpg Quarantine
Once again, we get a solid horror movie that doesn’t tear up the box office, but will be discovered by fans on DVD. Given its Blair Witch /Cloverfield POV, that seems almost appropriate.
7 10 twilight2-75x75.jpg Twilight
Speaking of vampire films done wrong, I’m jumping Twilight up three slots because it provoked the strongest reaction from you guys in HPR history. So let’s settle this, friends: Is Twilight going to be silly, or scary?
8 thehorder-75x75.jpg The Horde
Assault on Precinct 13 meets Dawn of the Dead , plus a little Die Hard . All those movies are good, and the concept art released certainly got the Net excited… Except for, you know, me. I’m calling a wait and see on this.
9 6 friday13th-75x75.jpg Friday the 13th
Dear New Line: Unless the scenes were super-terrible (which is always possible), cutting the genesis of Jason, as well as all the scenes with Mama Voorhees is a bad, bad, idea. Sincerely, Horror Power Ranking.
10 9 repothegeneticopera-75x75.jpg Repo! The Genetic Opera
It’s not that I’m not excited about Repo!, because I am. It’s just that there’s nine other things I’m more interested in talking about. In order, they are: Fear(s) of the Dark, Let the Right One In, FearFest ’08, Drag Me to Hell, Saw V, Quarantine
