Horror Power Ranking – September 8, 2008

OK, so maybe we are in the September doldrums with scant few horror releases before the October bonanza. But there is some major remake news this week ( Poltergeist has a director) and, at long last, official word on Ghostbusters 3. Plus, we’ve got news about Universal’s classic monsters, as well as the rubbery, reptilian star of Vipers. Power Rankings, ho!

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie (or Comic, etc.)
1 ghostbusters75.jpg.jpg Ghostbusters 3
A script by writers from The Office? The original cast possibly reuniting? The suspense alone is enough to rocket Ghostbusters 3 to the top spot. And even a mediocre sequel is better than Ghost Town.
2 2 wolfman-75x75.jpg The Wolf-Man
The Wolf-Man takes second place again thanks to the leaked trailer and news that Guillermo del Toro will be tackling fellow Universal monsters Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll. Almost makes us forget The Mummy: Tomb of the Tired Franchise.
3 guillermo-del-toro_75.jpg Drood
Del Toro again, who will be directing every horror film until 2017. This one features a murderous Charles Dickens and the story behind The Mystery of Edwin Drood. As the new horror/fantasy king, del Toro earns his place on the chart.
4 Bruce_75.jpg My Name Is Bruce
Bruce Campbell (as himself) fighting demons in a small town sounds so good, we can’t believe it’s true. But it finally has a release date and a tie-in comic. Even better, the sequel’s called My Name Is Still Bruce.
5 childsplay-75.jpg Child’s Play
Has it really been 20 years since Child’s Play? Shouldn’t Chucky be a college sophomore by now? At any rate, he’s getting a redesign. It’s yet another remake, but creator Don Mancini gets points for keeping Brad Dourif in the mix.
6 trueblood-75.jpg True Blood
Can HBO’s sexy vampire show ride the Twilight wave? Much as I love Six Under Feet, the premiere didn’t wow me. But attractive, angsty vampires are certainly hot right now. We’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt.
7 tom_75.jpg The Monster of Florence
Tom Cruise as a serial killer? The exotic setting and subject matter suggests The Talented Mr. Ripley meets American Psycho . Can horror save Tom’s career? Tropic Thunder notwithstanding, it could be an uphill battle.
8 poltergeist-75x75.jpg Poltergeist
The remake is being helmed by the guy who did The House of Sand and Fog. Interesting choice, but we were hoping for Tobe Hooper, who’s been pretty quiet of late. Remake fatigue and the lack of Hooper drops this one a few notches.
9 6 mirrors-75x75.jpg Mirrors
Sorry, Kiefer fans. We all had high hopes for his return to horror, but the film basically tanked. Hopefully Alexandre Aja will bounce back with Piranha 3-D. There hasn’t been a good piranha movie since, well, Piranha .
10 vipers_tara_75.jpg Vipers
Remember Snakes on a Plane ? For that matter, remember Tara Reid? The just released pics for this direct-to-DVD serpent-fest scream “on the shelf since 2006,” sending Vipers directly to the bottom of the chart.
