SciFi Power Ranking – August 11, 2008

Alas, poor Scotty. How ignoble is this? Actor James Doohan — best known as Star Trek‘s Scotty — left instructions at his passing that he wanted to have his ashes scattered in space.  But the ashes didn’t quite make it, ending up in the ocean instead. The company responsible for the failed rocket —  their third consecutive failed attempt — says they’ll get it right eventually, but how consoling is that for the family of Doohan and the other 207 people whose ashes were on board the rocket? You don’t think maybe the company should’ve tested the thing before loading it up with human remains and telecom satellites?

And in other news, Pineapple Express has taken a big bite out of The Dark Knight‘s box office but Bats continues to be a mighty juggernaut. I’d like to make $400 mil in eighteen days…

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie (or Comic, etc.)
1 1 darkknight.jpg The Dark Knight
It’s not just the film of the summer, it’s the film of the year and still has a fighting chance of becoming the number one film of all time. Is it any wonder casting rumors are already flying for the next installment?
2 7 starwarscgi.jpg Clone Wars
The latest chapter of the Star Wars franchise arrives this week, and with fan anticipation running high and the media abuzz, expect this to top the weekend charts. It’s can’t be worse than The Phantom Menace, right?
3 2 Watchmen.jpg Watchmen
A cult favorite, it would’ve had fans in a frenzy no matter what, but running that trailer in front of The Dark Knight may well be enough to make it a major mainstream hit. The deluge of behind the scenes news has begun.
4 –  theroad.jpg The Road
Living post-apocalyptic automatically counts as scifi, right? Maybe it’s a halo effect from the last  Cormac McCarthy adaptation, but people are already drooling over the first stills of John Hillcoat’s interpretation.
5 – Battlestar Galactica Prequel
Battlestar Galactica may be coming to an end but there’s no reason they can’t add on to the beginning and that’s exactly what they’re doing. Cue rejoicing from the legion of fans.
6 4 dollhouse75x75.jpg Dollhouse
Does Joss Whedon ever know how to work the press: There’s really nothing new from Dollhouse land, but a couple of “leaked” script pages and chatter about the reshot pilot is making sure nobody forgets about Whedon’s new baby…
7  –  indianajonescrystal.jpg Indiana Jones V
Middling reviews or not, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made more than enough money to put George Lucas in an Indy V frame of mind. He’s already made everybody happy by saying it’ll be an Indy film and not a Mutt Williams one.
8  –  terminator.robot.jpg Terminator Salvation
Yes, everybody already knew Helena Bonham Carter was going to appear in the new Terminator flick, which is why this doesn’t rank higher. But now we also know that she’ll be playing a major villain. Bale versus Carter? Yes, please.
Sure, it may not even happen, but the original creator of 1980’s alien invasion series has written a script for a feature version and apparently I’m not the only one with nostalgia for this thing. That mouse-eating scene freaked me out something fierce as a kid…
10  –  RianJohnson.jpg Looper
Brick and Brothers Bloom director Rian Johnson is promising a dark, Philip K. Dick-inspired science fiction film next time out. Smart scifi from a smart young director? We’ll be keeping our eye on that.
