Previous AMC posts, Real Life Tough Guy Breaks Down Bronson and What Makes Charles Bronson So Tough, revealed how fans feel about the man who got the job done in Death Wish. But what did the actor think about himself? While hardly the chattiest of stars, Bronson’s comments over the years provide a glimpse of what he thought about himself and his big screen persona.
In 1978, he defended the Death Wish films: “I think they provide satisfaction for people who are victimized by crime and look in vain for authorities to protect them. But I don’t think people try to imitate that kind of thing.”
And when it came to himself, in 1985, Bronson told Reuters he knew what entertained him — and it wasn’t his own work: “I am not a fan of myself.” He said the same thing in a 1993 interview with USA Today and added that he never watched his own films.
Some other classic Bronson on Bronson quotes…
“I have a lot of friends and yet I don’t have any.”
“I have often
thought how lovely it would be to lean on a mantelpiece with a cocktail
in my hand and let the dialogue do the acting.”
“Acting is the easiest thing I’ve done, I guess that’s why I’m stuck with it.”
“Maybe I’m too masculine. Casting directors cast in their own, or an idealized image. Maybe I don’t look like anybody’s ideal.”
“I look like the kind of guy who has a bottle of beer in my hand.”
“We don’t make movies for critics, since they don’t pay to see them anyhow.”
“I look like a rock quarry that someone has dynamited.”
