As films go, Planet of the Apes isn’t a conventional horror pick — unless you count the monkey fashion choices. (The wardrobe might make you giggle now, but
remember the film was considered high art back in 1968.) So while the scares might not be overt, the film delivers the most insidious of messages: the monsters are us.
Based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, the catalyst for mankind’s demise (and the rise of the apes) is our no end of questionable merchandise … the last of which makes you wonder if civilization’s devolution goes beyond the big screen.
