Last fall, news spread over the blogosphere that a remake of The Karate Kid was in the works. The Movie Blog confirmed that rumor: Will Smith is planning to direct and produce; his son is set to replace Ralph Macchio while Stephen Chow has been approached about playing Mr. Miyagi. (Chow is best known in the U.S. for his moves in Kung Fu Hustle .)
Aside from being a bona fide crowd-pleaser, the original 1984 film sparked a national interest in the martial arts–especially among kids. Perhaps, the Smith-driven remake will do the same for a new generation of couch potatoes.
