After a between-season hiatus of more than a year and a five-month absence from the airwaves since the premier of the Razor television movie, an abbreviated season four of Battlestar Galactica is finally set to kick off on Friday, April 4th at 10pm. In the world of television, that’s a long time off the air, especially for a show with a plot arc. Will viewers return for the best sci-fi show on television?
That’s what the Sci Fi Channel is wondering. To hedge their bets, the
Sci Fi Channel will air two half-hour specials in March to get
forgetful viewers psyched. The first special, Battlestar Galactica: Revisited, is a plot synopsis of the first three seasons. The second, Battlestar Galactica: The Phenomenon,
examines the critical buzz for the series in order to assure you, oh
cathode ray tube sheep, that you will, in fact, be conforming to the
cultural zeitgeist if you tune in for Season 4.
It’s all a fine if slightly uninteresting idea, but even if Sci Fi
pulls in record viewers for the portion of Season 4 they have in the
can, it seems unlikely that it’ll be worth their starting up production
again to film the final dozen episodes or so.
