Teeth: The First Five Minutes

Teeth Perhaps because Cloverfield is garnering so much attention, Roadside Attractions decided to release the first five minutes of Teeth to various Web sites, including Bloody Disgusting. Director Mitchell Lichtenstein’s small film, which opens on the same day as J.J. Abrams’s mega-monster movie, begins with light if foreboding music and a bucolic landscape. A mildly bloody scene in a kiddie pool sets up some tension. Credits roll over colorful microscopic cells, one of which chomps two others. Something is up. Then, in a school room, the pensive but beautiful Jess Wiexler waxes on about abstinence, about the self-restraint that shouldn’t end until marriage. It’s an admirably slow setup for what should  prove a gripping cautionary tale.
