When I read in The Hollywood Reporter today that Meryl Streep will be honored with a Gala Tribute by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, my first thought was: haven’t they done that already?
It’s hard to believe that there are any awards the actress generally considered the finest of her generation hasn’t already received, or at least been nominated for.
And as far as the gold standard of acting awards, Streep may not have won the most Academy Awards (that would be Katharine Hepburn, who won four times), but she holds the record for the most nominations: 14 to date, and at the age of 58 she’s likely to get a few more.
If that doesn’t impress you, try this: not counting animated films, Streep has made 48 films in the last 30 years. That comes out to one Oscar nomination for every 3 1/2 movies, or one every 2.14 years. If Jennifer Hudson never makes another movie she can beat that, but that would just be silly, wouldn’t it?
Of course, there are those who will argue that Streep sometimes gets nominated just for being Streep, that the Academy tends not to pay enough attention to other actresses struggling to be recognized. So let’s take a poll: which of the following Streep performances do you think least deserved an Oscar nomination? If you’d like to expound on your answer, we’d love to read your comments!
