When you watch Darrel Zanuck’s The Longest Day at 12 a.m. tonight on AMC, remember that the tag line for the movie poster (left) was "42 International Stars!" In addition to John Wayne, the film stars back-in-the-day heartthrobs Fabian, Paul Anka and Sal Minneo. Add to that Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Peter Lawford, and you have a film about the invasion of Normandy that’s watchable for the cameo appearances alone.
Some trivia: Did you know that President Dwight D. Eisenhower was considered to play his war hero self in the movie? The president supposedly was up for the job, but he was axed when makeup artists felt there was no way they could make him look like the young military man he once was.
