Max von Sydow’s immortal words as the Fu Manchu-ish Ming the Merciless: “Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void,
without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would’ve hidden from it in terror.“
With a few minor tweaks, Ming might have been talking about SciFi’s upcoming and dreadful-looking Flash Gordon update, which Flash Gordon fans can only pray will be cancelled within a season. But there’s good news to cleanse the palate: yesterday, the DVD version of Dino de Laurentiis’ 1980’s version of Flash Gordon (Savior of the Universe) was finally rereleased.
For fans of this schlocky cult masterpiece, this is a long time coming. The film’s been out print for almost 9 years. This is one of those films every fan of B-movie sci-fi films must own: it can be pulled out on every drunken occasion, a cornucopia of quotes to be recited again and again with an ironic smirk. I often introduce myself to strangers as “John Brownlee. Quarterback. New York Jets.”
The DVD’s now available on Amazon.com for $16.99. Everyone should own this: don’t be frugal.Read More
