Until she can change herself back, she must figure out how to win an upcoming cheer competition, go to the prom, and win back her boyfriend, all while her best friend begins to fall in love with the man she has suddenly become.
‘The goal was to not be disrespectful. I didn’t want to mock women, so I had to find the right level. I wanted to celebrate women,’ explains Rob Schneider, co-writer and star of The Hot Chick.
Schneider (picture with Anna Faris) and co-star Rachel McAdams had to portray characters of the opposite sex for most of the movie. ‘A woman cries and laughs all in five minutes and it’s believable, but if a guy does it, it’s disturbing,’ Schneider continues. ‘The movie is trying to push that line. It’s a chick flick disguised as a guy movie.’
Schneider did plenty of practical research before tackling the role of a young woman. ‘I hung out with all the girls on the set and it was the most fun I’ve had making a movie,’ he says. ‘They were very helpful to me. Whenever I had a question, I had Rachel and Anna to help me out.’
‘We did research,’ confirms director Tom Brady, a Harvard graduate. ‘I sat in coffee houses near colleges while listening to the way difference girls spoke. I even visited newsstands late at night and bought magazines like Seventeen. We took typical teen situations and tried to make them funnier to make it a good movie, we had to remember when we were in high school.’
‘I never think about the performance, I just think about how funny it could be,’ Schneider says. ‘I wanted to be venerable, but not in a way that mocked women. If I acted like a flaming fruit the whole time the movie wouldn’t work. I like the challenge of making a comedy, and it is a challenge. It’s an arrogant thing to claim we’re going to make you laugh.’
Brady agrees. ‘When we played each moment in the most honest way, and everything just came into place,’ he says. ‘We had all the young actresses to help decide what would be too far over the top or too masculine. We were very sparing and careful. If [Rob] played the whole movie with [a high voice] pitch, it probably would have gotten pretty annoying.’
Anna Faris, who previously starred in the Scary Movie series, also enjoyed working with Schneider and the cast. ‘I loved working with the other girls,’ she explains. ‘It’s the high school I never had-the high school reality that was never mine. I was never that popular. No guys liked me. My world was so small. It was fun to do this movie because I got to be the popular girl.’
‘She would just build with me,’ says Schneider as he praises Faris. ‘I’m very proud of our scenes together. If the actors aren’t bouncing off each other, it’s ordinary. But if you can get these actors to build with each other, it’s extraordinary. She always has the ability to be extraordinary. In this film, I think she’s extraordinary.’
Faris returns Schneider’s compliments. ‘I liked the stuff in the bedroom with Rob, when it was just Rob and I,’ she says. ‘He’s a great guy. He’s really considerate. He’s a really generous actor, and he gave me a lot emotionally. He was really invested in this project, and that also made it really nice to work with him.’Read More
