NY Times Reports on Silicon Valley & A.I.; Reuters on Google’s A.I. Limits

This week, The New York Times explores how Silicon Valley is dealing with artificial intelligence, while Reuters reports that Google has set limits on how it’s using the technology. Plus, Rolling Stone reveals there’s now an A.I. algorithm trained to be a psychopath. Read on for more:

The New York Times proclaims, “As the tech moguls disagree over the risks presented by something that doesn’t exist yet, all of Silicon Valley is learning about unintended consequences of A.I.”

Reuters states, “Google will not allow its artificial intelligence software to be used in weapons or unreasonable surveillance efforts under new standards for its business decisions in the nascent field.”

Rolling Stone says, “Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology unveiled the first artificial intelligence algorithm trained to be a psychopath. The AI was fittingly dubbed ‘Norman’ after Norman Bates, the notorious killer in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.”

• An Apple executive tells Wired that he’s trying to “get more app developers to use artificial intelligence tools such as recognizing objects in front of an iPhone’s camera. The hope is that will spawn a new generation of ideas from Apple’s ecosystem of outsourced innovation.”

• According to Reuters, “The U.S. military is increasing spending on a secret research effort to use artificial intelligence to help anticipate the launch of a nuclear-capable missile, as well as track and target mobile launchers in North Korea and elsewhere.”

NASASpaceFlight.com reports that the new International Space Station crew “will be joined on the Station by the first space-flying Artificial Intelligence robot, CIMON.”

Bloomberg reports on the debut of the first exchange-traded fund “to use AI technology to pick stocks from developed markets outside of the U.S.”
