How Better Call Saul Pulled Off That Opening Scene – Without CGI

Filming Episode 3 of Better Call Saul Season 5 was like wrangling ants. Literally!

The opening scene of the episode saw a whole host of ants descending on the sugary goodness left behind when Jimmy was forced to leave his ice cream cone on the sidewalk and get in the car with Nacho in the previous episode. While some could find watching an army of ants creepy, there was a certain beauty to the way the sequence was shot.

So beautiful, in fact, that you wouldn’t be blamed for believing that some visual effects trickery was used to create all those ants. However, as the creators of the show  and director Michael Morris detailed on the latest Better Call Saul Insider Podcast, the entire sequence was shot using real ants! Although the crew recreated a stretch of Albuquerque sidewalk on a soundstage, all of the insects were authentic.

Of course, capturing the tiny ants on camera posed some problems when it came to focusing and editing the shots, but that’s nothing the crack team behind Better Call Saul can’t handle. Hear about how that amazing sequence came together — including how yodeling became the soundtrack to the ants’ journey — now by subscribing and downloading to the Better Call Saul Insider Podcast.
