Today from the Television Critics’ Association (TCA) Press Tour, AMC and Sony announced the renewal of its critically-acclaimed original series Better Call Saul for a sixth and final season. The final chapter will include 13 episodes and is slated to air in 2021.
As the prequel to the award-winning AMC original Breaking Bad, it’s hard not to wonder how close the ending of Saul will come to the beginning of Bad. Not surprisingly, that’s top of mind for showrunner and executive producer Peter Gould. “From day one of Better Call Saul my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill,” Gould said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible. Next month we start work on the sixth and final season — we’re going to do our damnedest to stick the landing.”
“Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most iconic series in television history is one of the boldest swings that AMC has ever taken,” Sarah Barnett, President of AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and AMC Studios, said in a statement. “But, thanks to the creative genius of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, it has also been one of the most rewarding.” Added Jeff Frost, President, Sony Pictures Television, in a statement of his own: “While we are sad that this remarkable series is coming to a close, we can’t wait for Vince and Peter to divulge the sensational conclusion.”
The announcement of the final season comes just ahead of the highly-anticipated two-night premiere of Season 5 on Sunday, February 23 at 10/9c and Monday, February 24 at 9/8c. While we may not know where the final season will take Jimmy, we know that the fifth season will see him making the inevitable step to practice law as “Saul Goodman,” creating profound waves of change for everyone in his orbit.
