First, They Cleaned Up the Streets. Now Six Movie Vigilantes – Like Paul Kersey and Travis Bickle – Battle Each Other

The brave heroes wearing badges have nothing on the crime fighters who don’t. Where would the police be without some occasional help from lawless vigilantes? These night prowlers have more passion, and, without the burden of a badge, they can go dark. I mean, V (as in, for Vendetta) blew up parliament! He just blew it up, with fireworks and everything. Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) of Death Wish suffered a tragedy or seven and went on a five-movie killing spree, cleaning up the streets of New York and Los Angeles with everything from a machine gun to a rocket launcher. (No, really!) Taxi Driver‘s Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) may have his own problems but not as big a problem as he gives the New York underworld of the seventies. And as for Christian Bale’s Batman — well, his whole existence is dark. Find a movie cop as committed to ridding New York City of thugs as Bronson or Bale. The question isn’t whether they’ll beat the bad guys but which champion of justice you want protecting your turf.
