Opening Night – Steve Carell and Julie Andrews Behind the Scenes of Despicable Me

AMC News sat down with the stars of the new 3-D animated comedy Despicable Me to find out how they created and voiced their evil characters in the film. In the story, an aspiring super-villain named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) plots the “biggest heist of all time”: he wants to steal the moon. But that plan faces an unexpected roadblock: fatherhood.

Instead of using their recognizable voices, Carell and his co-stars — Jason Segel and the legendary Julie Andrews — created their own accents and distinguishing characteristics for each of their characters. Carell and Andrews created vaguely Eastern European accents, while Segel’s is more akin to a geeky American teen. When it came to the script, the actors read what was written for them but were also encouraged by the film’s directors to improvise jokes and lines in the recording booth. Many of those on-the-fly lines were added to the film. Despicable Me also features the voices of Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove.
