The Newsdesk 12.31.09 – Renner Won’t Play Hawkeye; Nine Release Scaled Back

• Sony accidentally released Armored for free in the PlayStation store. Pundits wonder if this is a sign of future distribution models. Or was it just a test to see if anyone would even watch that movie for free?

The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner denied rumors that he is playing Hawkeye in the Avengers movie. To be fair, Hawkeye wears a lot of purple. One can see his trepidation.

• The Weinstein Company has slashed the amount of theaters showing Nine, despite its Golden Globe nominations. The movie will go from 1,400 screens to around 890. But, darn it, it’ll go out dancing.

• A new image from Disney’s upcoming CGI/traditionally animated movie Rapunzel has been released. Uh oh! Looks like prince with the hipster goatee is in trouble!

• Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Matthew Fox and many others have been added as Golden Globe presenters. Ooh, Colin Farrell. Because he’s never mumbly and downright bored when presenting at award shows.

• The U.S. Film Registry has inducted The Muppet Movie, Once Upon a Time in the West, Dog Day Afternoon, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and several other films into the 2009 registry. You might be wondering how a music video snuck in there. Keep in mind that Thriller was originally released to theaters, and is also awesome.
