The Newsdesk 08.20.09 – Disney to Remake Yellow Submarine; Hendrix Biopic in the Works

• Disney is teaming up with filmmaker Robert Zemeckis for a 3D animated remake of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. Naturally, it’ll be performance-capture like Zemeckis’ other movies. Sorry, Robert, but no one can properly capture Ringo’s performance in “I Am the Walrus.”

• The filmmaker behind the hard rock documentary It Might Get Loud is developing a Jimi Hendrix biopic.

• Christopher Nolan has left the feature adaptation of The Prisoner TV series. Does this mean a certain sequel to a certain past film is in his future? Insomnia 2, perhaps?

Lionsgate is developing a Dirty Dancing remake, penned by the writer of Uptown Girls. Pretty soon Hollywood execs are just going to start coming into your home and smashing your DVD collection so you’ll have to see their pointless remakes.

• Actor/director Peter Berg discussed the possibility of a Hancock sequel. Wait, perhaps that should be “threatened us with the possibility of” a Hancock sequel.

New images from James Cameron’s Avatar have been released. Finally, cool spaceships with no weird blue aliens getting in the way.

• Jennifer Tilly and Justin Kirk (Weeds) have joined the cast of the indie drama 30 Beats. Sadly, it’s about the “amorous encounters” of Manhattanites and not about 30 beat poets.
