The Newsdesk 03.16.09 – Watchmen Can’t Top the Mountain; R.I.P. Ron Silver

• The first photos from Clint Eastwood’s Nelson Mandella biopic, The Human Factor, have been released. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon star. If the “mighty voice of Freeman” doesn’t win an Oscar for this one, Hollywood should just stop making movies all together.

• Disney’s Race to Witch Mountain took the top spot at the box office with an estimated $25 million in box office receipts. Watchmen took an unsurprising tumble to second place with $18.1 million, losing 67% of its audience.

• Actor and political activist Ron Silver (Reversal of Fortune, Timecop) passed away at age 62 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

• Rumor has it, Marvel delayed the release of Avengers so that Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau can direct potentially the greatest superhero team-up movie ever.

Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto, Hollywood’s current “It Girl”, could become the next Bond girl. Hopefully the theme song will feature an elaborate Bollywood-style dance number.

• Fox wants to reboot the Fantastic Four franchise with a darker take. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, but anything is better than the Jessica Alba movies.

• Images have been released from the David Fincher-produced adaptation of the Goon comics. Looks like Sin City‘s Marv meets Hellboy.
