The Newsdesk 01.21.09 – 50 Cent to Start Producing Movies; Superman Joins Scott Pilgrim

• Despite having a banner year at the box office thanks to The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. still plans to cut 10% of its worldwide staff in the coming weeks. This news is sure to put a smile on no one’s face

• While promoting his documentary Passing Strange at Sundance, Spike Lee said that he won’t be doing an Obama biopic with Will Smith. Smith is still interested, however, and plans to defend the White House from zombies.

• The filmmakers behind American Splendor will be helming The Extra Man, a drama about a failed playwright who works as an escort for wealthy society ladies. Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes, and John C. Reilly are all set to star. If we could only get Holmes out of there, this would be a perfect project.

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas revealed that a movie version of his cult hit detective show just might happen, and that star Kristin Bell is interested in snooping on the big screen.

• 50 Cent is expanding into film production with his new company Cheetah Vision. With Joaquin Phoenix giving up acting for a hip hop career, this seems only fair.

• Edgar Wright’s adaptation of cult comic book Scott Pilgrim is getting even more geek-friendly with the casting of Superman Returns star Brandon Routh and Fantastic Four‘s Chris Evans as two of the evil ex-boyfriends Pilgrim must vanquish in pursuit of his dream girl.
