Horror Power Ranking – January 19, 2009

Once again, My Bloody Valentine 3D dominates the Power Ranking, with its genius use of 3D blood, guts, and nudity — it’s basically the perfect horror movie. In other news, we’ve got the rise of the vampire comedies, the fall of the zombie comedy, and Jason is slowly slashing his way to the top. Let’s get to it, Horror Fiends:

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW Movie
1 1 mybloodyvalentine3d-75x75.jpg My Bloody Valentine 3D
Yes, it came in at number three in the box office, but it had a huge opening on the most profitable MLK weekend, ever. And even our own Stacie Ponder loved it. Expect to hear an announcement about MBV 3D 2: Back to the Miners shortly.
2 rosencrantz-75x75.jpg Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead
You had me at Shakespeare + Vampires + Comedy, but this clip over at MTV doesn’t hurt either. The flick is premiering at Slamdance, and hopefully will be in many, many other theaters soon.
3 atomage-75x75.jpg Atom Age Vampire
Speaking of vampire comedies, Salon’s Scott Bateman has taken the audio from this horror classic and re-animated the action, to hilarious effect. I’ve been hearing a lot of great buzz about this, so check it out.
4 8 friday13th0307-75x75.jpg Friday the 13th
Ah, there’s my Jason. I’ve been complaining about Ft13‘s lack of visibility for weeks, and they’ve just kicked the marketing up a very large notch. It may be too little too late, but I’m encouraged enough to bump this up four notches, too.
5 5 underworld-rise-75x75.jpg Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Underworld opens on Friday, and fans are… Well, I’m a fan, and even I’m a little wary of the whole affair. I think it’s our duty as horror fans to go see it, but hopefully this will be the last go around for the vampire/werewolf fighting series.
6 i_am_legend_will_smith-75x75.jpg I Will Be Legend
Information about I Am Legend‘s proposed prequel continues to trickle out and it seems that director Francis Lawrence is as confused by the idea as everyone else. So here’s a thought: Don’t make a prequel. Crazy, I know, but it just might work.
7 6 unborn_poster2-75x75.jpg The Unborn
I once had so much hope for The Unborn. Mainly, that it would be a good movie. Supporters are coming out of the woodwork, praising the alternative, Jewish exorcism in the movie, but it’s a little too late.
8 zombieland-75x75.jpg Zombieland
Zombie comedies are so 2004. Look up at number two and three on our Ranking, and you’ll see that vampire comedies are where it’s at. Having Emma Stone in your cast is nice, but get with the brains. I mean, program.
9 7 uninvited-75x75.jpg The Uninvited
Unless some sort of a miracle happens, The Uninvited has officially gotten lost in the shuffle between The Unborn, My Bloody Valentine, and the build-up to Friday the 13th. Too bad, because… Actually, no, wait, that’s totally fine.
10 10 ofthedead-75x75.jpg …Of the Dead
I’m keeping this at the bottom again this week, just to emphasize how upsetting it is. The movie looks sad, sounds sad, and you have the Zombieland people slagging off Romero in their press. So, George: Step up your game.
