The Newsdesk 12.26.08 – Fox is Watching Watchmen; R.I.P. Eartha Kitt and Harold Pinter

• A Los Angeles judge ruled in favor of Fox in the Watchmen case, claiming the studio owns distribution rights to the upcoming Warner Bros. movie. The ruling could hold up Watchmen‘s March 6th release date, causing scores of geeks to smash their Boba Fett collectible cups in anger.

• Actress, dancer, and “Santa Baby” singer Earth Kitt passed away at the age of 81 after a battle with colon cancer. A total class act, Kitt will forever be remembered as the ultimate Catwoman from her time in the 1960s Batman TV series.

• The Christmas Day movie releases broke box office records with Marley & Me taking the top spot with nearly $13 million, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button nabbing second place with $11 mill. The only flick that didn’t benefit from the Christmas spirit was, strangely enough, The Spirit, which tanked in 7th place. What does this mean for Frank Miller’s directing career?

• Playwright, screenwriter and Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter passed away at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. Writer of The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Betrayal , Pinter was nominated for two screenwriting Oscars and won two BAFTAs, the British equivalent.

Gilligan’s Island creator Sherwood Schwartz wants Michael Cera to star as Gilligan. Great, one more thing keeping Cera away from the Arrested Development movie. Hopefully he won’t star opposite the Harlem Globetrotters like poor Bob Denver did.

• Start your office pools now: Benjamin Button is leading the Oscar prediction race with 14 noms according to one expert.
