SciFi Power Ranking – December 8, 2008

What happened, J.J.? Your relaunched Star Trek has tumbled all the way off the list from first place last week. Is it disinterest? Disaster? Nope, it’s just been an incredibly busy week in the land of science fiction. Between Terminator, Watchmen, and a surprising amount of scifi television, there’s just no room for the final frontier. But Trek at least deserves a nod in this week’s introduction. As does George Lucas, who is publicly acknowledging the existence of the Star Wars Christmas Special — which was so amazingly horrible that he’s kept it locked in a vault for decades — in interviews on the official Star Wars blog. I guess Wookiee Christmas carols can only stay buried for so long.

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW Movie, Show or Comic
1 2 terminator.robot.jpg Terminator: Salvation
Well, McG, you’ve done what mere months ago most fanboys would have said was impossible: The new Terminator is the most talked about picture in the scifi world. I tip my hat to you.
2 4 caprica.jpg Battlestar Galactica
It’s a truism that sex sells, and that’s apprently doubly true when the sex is gay and it involves a fan favorite character. Cue chatter about BSG’s Gaeta gettin’ some.
3 theylive75.jpg They Live
Best idea ever or one of the worst? Those seem to be the only viable options for the proposed remake of John Carpenter’s scifi conspiracy picture. The only question I have: Will there still be a huge fight scene over a pair of sunglasses?
4 10 Watchmen.jpg Watchmen
Zack Snyder’s baby has climbed back up the charts, but maybe no news is good news: The current buzz is all about him finally agreeing to cut fifteen minutes from the film — a sure sign that expectations for this movie are getting out of control.
5 Day_The_Earth_Stood_Still.jpg The Day the Earth Stood Still
Big-time scifi makes it back to the big screen this week. Whether The Day Keanu Stood Still lives up to the original is yet to be seen, but Fox’s marketing machine is at full throttle making sure people know this is coming.
6 heroeslogo_tn.jpg Heroes
Fresh off the demise of Pushing Daisies, original Heroes producer Bryan Fuller is on his way back to the troubled superhero series. Fan optimism is indeed cautious. It’s great news, but is it too little, too late?
7 dollhouse75x75.jpg Dollhouse
Eliza Dushku’s defending it, Time magazine is panning it, fanboys are split down the middle. All signs say that Whedon’s relationship with Fox will probably remain turbulent for a while yet…
8 darkknight.jpg The Dark Knight
The biggest film of the year is coming back to the big screen. The fact that news this big barely made a dent this week speaks volumes about the kind of week it’s been.
9 4 caprica.jpg Caprica
The speculation is over: SciFi Channel has finally greenlit a full season of the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. Given BSG‘s rabid fanbase this was pretty much inevitable, but it’s still good to have it official.
10 3 timecrimes75.jpg Timecrimes
Normally a slide from 3rd to 10th would be disastrous. But just like the Dark Knight reissue, this is purely a matter of competition, not quality. The movie’s theatrical release this week is tiny, but there’s no project more anticipated by insiders.
