Horror Power Ranking – November 10, 2008

We’re entering the period between Halloween and Christmas, when the moviegoing populace is far more focused on buying presents than watching innocent victims be chopped into little bits. So we only have two newcomers this week, Book of Blood, the long awaited Clive Barker adaptation; and The Corporate Zombie Killers, which sounds vaguely familiar for some reason. Plus, Twilight continues it’s march to the top, and House proves that sometimes, a movie is just so bad, it’s bad:

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW Movie
1 bookofblood-75x75.jpg Clive Barker’s Book of Blood
Having revisited both Candyman and Midnight Meat Train this weekend, getting news of a new Clive Barker adaptation, the long awaited Book of Blood, is like getting candy from the, er, Candyman.
2 5 repo-the-genetic-opera-75x75.jpg Repo! The Genetic Opera
What I’ve been telling you for months has finally been confirmed by the critics: Repo! is a bloody good time at the movie theater. Since Lionsgate is desperately trying to dump it anyway, check it out with a live crowd while you can.
3 1 friday13th-75x75.jpg Friday the 13th
OK, so I’ve come down from my post-Halloween high of last week (hence F13 falling two slots), but I’m still pretty darn psyched to see everyone’s favorite hockey-masked killer slice and dice.
4 4 lettherightonein-75x75.jpg Let the Right One in
LTROI hangs even this week, but continues to be forefront in our minds. Well, my mind, at least. For those of you who have seen the movie, let’s all play a game called: “Convincing those people who haven’t seen it to go see it.”
5 9 twilight2-75x75.jpg Twilight
With two weeks to go, Twilight is already sold out for pretty much the entire first weekend. Hey, I still think it looks silly, but apparently a large population of America would, you know, kill me for saying that.
6 2 sawv-75x75.jpg Saw V
So what’s next for Saw? Has it officially “trapped the shark,” as it were? I personally don’t think the torture porn series is long for this world. I give it one or two more movies before it’s “Jigsaw in Space.”
7 7 fearsofthedark-75x75.jpg Fear(s) of the Dark
Like Let the Right One in, here’s another even-hanger this week. No doubt that this movie will find second life on DVD, but try to catch it in what will most likely be its last week in the theaters.
8 dannyleiner-75x75.jpg The Corporate Zombie Killers
Danny Leiner, director of the excellent (yes, really) Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, is taking on a zombie comedy pitting zombies against temps in a corporate office park. I liked this idea better when it was called Shaun of the Dead.
9 3 splinter-75x75.jpg Splinter
That’s a pretty meteoric fall for Splinter, and it’s for a reason: Audiences just haven’t responded to its old school monster movie mayhem. We want a twist, something new, and Splinter can’t provide that.
10 6 house-75x75.jpg House
Last week, I said I hoped House fell into the so-bad-it’s-good category. Turns out, House is just so bad, it’s awful. Part of me that wishes “Christian Entertainment” wasn’t a stamp of awfulness, but for now, it is.
