SciFi Power Ranking – September 29, 2008

It’s been a busy week in SciFi Land: Johnny Depp signed on to play the Mad Hatter, Tonto, and Captain Jack Sparrow (again); Summit announced a 3,000-screen release for Astro Boy, in 2009; and Spielberg scooped up the rights to John Wyndham’s 1968 science-fiction novel, Chocky. And none of those items even made the list! What tops the Power Ranking are two Batman bits. Hey, kill us: We’re fanboys to the core.

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie, Show or Comic
1 darkknight.jpg The Dark Knight
After a few weeks off the list, the biggest franchise of 2008 makes a triumphant return by announcing the extras on its upcoming DVD. The features themselves don’t seem that exceptional, but that hasn’t dimmed the loud buzz.
2 Watchmen.jpg Watchmen vs. Batman
Is the Watchmen lawsuit just a ploy to get Batman TV episodes out on DVD?  It could very well be. Whatever tactic gets us access to those campy shows featuring Adam West and Burt Ward is fine by us. Holy duplicity!
3 1 fringe.jpg Fringe
Crazy genius Walter Bishop is the best new scifi character on TV this season. Good God, the writers must have fun penning his dialogue. The impressive ratings bump from the first few episodes hasn’t repeated yet, but Fringe is a bona fide hit.
4 BenjaminButton75.jpg The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Director David Fincher ( Seven , Fight Club ) is a genius, too, and David Fincher with a huge cast, a big budget, and a brand-new trailer is a genius whom this Power Ranker is only too happy to promote on his weekly list.
5 8 Star_Trek75.jpg Star Trek
It’s not news that William Shatner isn’t happy with J.J. Abrams for telling people that the actor lobbied for a part in the new Trek film. What is news is how Shatner’s ongoing complaints have kept Trek in the headlines.
6 ghostbusters75.jpg.jpg Ghostbusters 3
Bill Murray is good to go. What else do you need to know? Cue the celebratory music, the silver confetti, and the dancing girls dressed like the Statue of Liberty.
7 3 KickAss75.jpg Kick Ass
Shooting continues, photos are leaking, and despite the Nicolas Cage jinx, people are starting to think this one might be good. Considering writer-director Mathew Vaughn is also responsible for the fantasy Stardust , our hopes for this one are guarded.
8 9 spirit.jpg The Spirit
Is it a good thing when you release a new trailer even as the cast informs fans that the marketing is misleading? Stars say it’s a comedy, the footage suggests it’s a noir, and the gossipmongers are predicting a train wreck.
9 4 heroeslogo_tn.jpg Heroes
Tim Kring, your baby’s in bad shape. Huge hype leading into Season 3 hasn’t prevented Heroes viewership from dropping by a quarter. Ouch! The last season was cut short by the writers’ strike. Will this one be killed by the ratings?
10 TimeCrimes75.jpg Time Crimes
A highly praised mind-bender from Spain is finally coming to U.S. shores, a development we celebrate by sharing a ludicrously spoiler-happy trailer. On second thought, check out the better, international version, instead.
