SciFi Power Ranking – September 8, 2008

The world became a sadder place this past week with the passing of Don LaFontaine, aka Mr. Movie Voice. We now live in a world where nobody gets to say “In a world where …” ever again. Seriously, people, give this man a star on the walk of fame; nobody deserves one more. Moving on from LaFontaine, the big movers and the shakers are the sequels with massive news on a couple fronts. Break out your ectoplasm and web-slingers, kids, ’cause there are big things afoot …

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie (or Comic, etc.)
1 spider-man75.jpg Spider-Man 4&5
That Spidey’s coming back isn’t news, but who would be inside the suit and who would be behind the camera were big questions. Breathe easy: Sam Raimi and Tobey Maquire have both committed for two more.
2 ghostbusters75.jpg.jpg Ghostbusters III
Who you gonna call? Columbia’s calling The Office, enlisting the sitcom’s writers to pen a new Ghostbusters script with an eye to enlisting the entire original cast. Hell, yeah.
3 8 Watchmen.jpg Watchmen
The Watchmen news continues to trickle out on the legal front, but word that a trial date has been set for the copyright lawsuit is being met with much relief. Just pay ’em, boys, and everybody walks away happy.
4 7 caprica.jpg Battlestar Galactica
Spoilers! Spin off news! Will they or won’t they push the finale back? Sure, there’s lots of chatter about the new fall shows, but if you’re a scifi fan talking about what’s on the box, chances are you’re starting with Battlestar.
5 9 darkknight.jpg The Dark Knight
The five hundred mil mark has come and gone and The Dark Knight continues to perform above expectations. It creeps back up this week because all that early Oscar speculation? That should resume in five, four, three, two…
6 Sky_Crawlers75.jpg Sky Crawlers
It’s the new feature from the legendary animator behind Ghost in the Shell; it just won one of the first awards announced at the Venice Film Festival and early press out of Toronto is glowing. The anime icon is back on his game.
7 8 fringe.jpg Fringe
Fringe versus Dollhouse continues to rage with J.J. Abrams’ creation taking the crown this week. The TV spots are turning up all over, fan chatter is picking up and it’s just looking mighty tasty.
8 dollhouse75x75.jpg Dollhouse
Come on Joss, you’re falling behind here … though, of course, it’s not like people are still mighty juiced about Whedon’s latest, just not as juiced (this week) as they are for Fringe.
9 denzel75.jpg Book of Eli
Denzel Washington doing a post apocalyptic flick with the Hughes Brothers? Can they bring some edge back to Denzel’s game? I’m betting no, but it’s nice to dream.
10 KickAss75.jpg Kick Ass
Hey, Nic! Maybe you should have, you know, read Kick Ass before agreeing to be in the movie.  Would have saved the embarrassment of this. Replace ‘kick’ with ‘dumb’ and you have my general opinion of Nic Cage.
