SciFi Power Ranking – June 23, 2008

No new scifi flicks opening in theaters this week, but that’s not to
say there isn’t plenty of other news out there: Iron Man achieves a major milestone and Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to Cowboys and Aliens. And when there is news,
there must be Rankings! But first, a moment to remember legendary FX man Stan Winston, whose unexpected passing this week was on our minds. His influence on the genre cannot possibly be overstated — we’ll miss you, Stan.

SciFi Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie (or Comic, etc.)
1 1 hulk-75.jpg The Incredible Hulk
This is shaping up to be the summer of Marvel and their big green man continues to flex his muscles. Will there be sequels? Will the Hulk be the villain of the upcoming Avengers movie? Will Ed Norton stop sulking? Buzz and box office keeps The Incredible Hulk at the top of the list.
2 6 WallE.jpg Wall-E
Think The Love Guru or Get Smart will be able to keep the little animated robot from dominating ticket sales when it opens this week? Not likely: A spate of new promo spots plus an omnipresent ad campaign is driving anticipation way, way up.
3 –  iron_man_75.jpg Iron Man
Off the list for the past couple weeks, Iron Man comes storming back, with the news that it’s the first film this year to cross the $300 million mark in domestic box office. It’s not like Tony Stark needs an excuse to raise a glass, but he’s got a good one here.
4 3 indianajonescrystal.jpg Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man may have hit the three hundred mil mark first, but Dr. Jones will certainly get there second — likely crossing the line some time between when I write this and when you read it. Staying power counts for a lot and Jones has got it.
5 9 x-files.jpg X Files: I Want To Believe
I’ve still got a bad, bad feeling about this one, but there’s a new trailer out there, people are buzzing and the nostalgia factor may be enough to put it over the top. A good sign: They’re not referencing the original show plot lines at all, so maybe a restart is possible …
6 –  cowboysandaliens.jpg Cowboys and Aliens
The 300 Million Dollar Man has announced he’s getting into the saddle for scifi-western hybrid Cowboys and Aliens. The genre has not fared well lately, but with Robert Downey in the lead, all the big kids are paying attention.
7 Astroboy.jpg Astroboy
The addition of A-listers Nicolas Cage and Donald Sutherland to the voice cast has people taking notice of the upcoming Astroboy feature film. The little robot boy is ready to introduce anime to a new generation.
8 –  robotech.jpg Robotech
Time to take Tobey Macguire’s live action Robotech seriously, folks. He’s got Laurence Kasdan on board and as the writer of Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Kasdan brings instant credibility.
9 leterrier.jpg Strays
Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier is no dummy.  He’s using the wave of press around the Hulk‘s success to plump up his next project, Strays. And it’s working: The post-apocalyptic scifi adventure is the talk of the town.
10 –  k9.jpg K-9 Adventures
And, finally, we close out the list with something that could suck, but I kind of hope doesn’t: The minds behind Doctor Who are giving the robot dog, K-9, his own show. This has failed once before, but the current brain trust seems to have a better clue about what they’re doing…
