Horror Power Ranking List – June 2, 2008

“Because you were home.” These four simple words sit at the top of the posters for this week’s biggest horror release, The Strangers, and if they don’t send shivers down your spine… Well, then you’re probably the one saying the phrase, rather than hearing it. In other news, we get two upcoming horror adaptations with completely unbelievable source material… and for a horror chart whose top three spots are populated by movies based on “true events,” that’s saying a lot:

Horror Power Rankings
Rank LW   Movie (or Comic, etc.)
1 9 strangers-75x75.jpg The Strangers
The critics either love or hate this sparse, tense psychological home invasion thriller. Our critic fell on the hate side, saying that it, “doesn’t have much to offer.” Seeing as the horror “offer”ings are slim this weekend, this is still the film to see.
2 savagegrace-75x75.jpg Savage Grace
The stealth horror release this week is Savage Grace, a biopic about Barbara Daly, heir to a plastics fortune. With murder, betrayal, and incest on display, the studio may not be selling it as horror, but it’s still pretty terrifying in our book.
3 stuck-75x75.jpg Stuck
Contrary to The Strangers, our critic loved Stuart Gordon’s mash-up of comedy, horror, and something entirely original, saying that the film is, “practically flawless.” With steadily building buzz, this is one to keep your eye on.
4 5 hapening-75x75.jpg The Happening
The non-stop barrage of TV adds for the M. Night Shyamalan flick are touting that it’s the director’s first R-rated film. Having seen early clips from the film, we can say that the R rating is well deserved. Get ready for a blood-fest, horror fans.
5 michaelkwilliams-75x75.jpg Michael K. Williams
The talented actor from HBO’s The Wire is involved in two horror adaptations, The Road, and Tell-Tale… Ensuring that millions of people will talk about how amazing they are, but won’t actually watch them. That’s a Wire joke, people.
6 sdarko-75x75.jpg S. Darko
We promised ourselves we wouldn’t plug this misguided sequel to cult classic Donnie Darko, but with the addition of cast-member Elizabeth Berkley, this may approach delightful disaster level, and put it smack dab on our radar.
7 3 twilight.jpg Twilight
The initial buzz for Twilight has slowed somewhat; though, the entire first action scene from the vampire romance  film will be shown at the MTV Movie Awards. Target, meet Audience. Audience, Target.
8 ouija-75x75.jpg Ouija Board: The Movie
Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, in association with Hasbro, will produce David Berenbaum’s script based on the classic ghost-summoning game. Which would be the most ridiculous adaptation we’ve heard of all week, if it weren’t for…
9 emilythestrange-75x75.jpg Emily The Strange
…The movie based on a sticker. Okay, that’s not entirely fair; there are several issues out of the Emily the Strange comic book from Dark Horse. Though, to continue to be fair, those are based on the continuity established in the Emily T-shirts.
10 hoxford-75x75.jpg Welcome to Hoxford
All we know about Ben Templesmith’s new comic book series from IDW is that it comes out in August, and has a new teaser poster with horrifying looking dripping fangs on it. And that’s all we need to know to start lining up right now.
