Dennis Farina: Super Cop

2striking_distance.jpg

Dennis Farina is the ultimate on-screen cop. Whether he’s playing Karen Sisco’s dad, Marshall in Out of Sight , FBI agent Jack Crawford in Manhunter (a full five years before Scott Glenn took on the role in Silence of the Lambs ) or Captain Nick Detillo in Striking Distance, Farina embodies the streetwise, yet wisecracking officer. Farina’s talents go beyond the big screen — on TV, he played Detective Joe Fontana on Law & Order and Lt. Mike Torello on Crime Story. (One of the weirdest cop dramas in television history, Michael Mann wrote for the Crime Story before creating Miami Vice.)

In Striking Distance: Bruce Willis stars as detective Tom Hardy and Farina plays his uncle, protector and confidant. Fresh from the success of Die Hard and Die Hard 2,
Willis is the young, tough-guy lead with rakish charm and an attitude
problem. But it’s Farina’s character who actually knows
what’s going on. While Willis and sidekick Sarah Jessica Parker track a serial killer using some highly unorthodox detective work, Farina keeps his nephew out of harm’s way and protects another cop’s reputation. As an elder statesman of the police department, Farina’s character is a role model and a cautionary tale all in
one.

You might not always remember who Dennis Farina plays in a movie. Just that he’s the guy who understood the big picture, the one who remembered
the detail from a decade-old case, the one that hid an unsavory
secret for another officer. He’s the super cop; the one who’s got it
all figured out.

Striking Distance plays today, February 26 at 8 PM | 7C.  For a complete schedule click here.
