I hate to sound sexist, but if you have a “Y” chromosome there’s just no way you want to miss the day of movies AMC has scheduled for you on Friday. Send the women out shopping and tell them you have some serious couch-potatoing to do! (And if they give you any guff, you know what to do: whine and claim you have a tummy ache from eating too much on Thursday.)
Of course you’ll want to sleep in, so you don’t have to get settled on the sofa until 8:30 am, when the day starts with everyone’s favorite baseball movie The Natural, starring Robert Redford and Robert Duvall (and filmed in my home town of Buffalo!) Redford’s back at 11:30 am as a crusading prison warden in Brubaker, which features an early appearance by Morgan Freeman. At 2:30pm it’s Redford’s pal Paul Newman in prison and failing to communicate in the classic Cool Hand Luke. Check out his fellow chaingangers: Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rogers, Joe Don Baker and Oscar winner George Kennedy.
As fine a cast as that is, though, it pales next to Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Telly Savalas, John Cassavetes, Donald Sutherland, Charles Bronson, Trini Lopez, Jim Brown, Clint Walker, Richard Jaeckel, Ralph Meeker, and Robert Ryan—do I even have to say that it’s The Dirty Dozen at 5pm? As the poster screamed, “Train them! Excite them! Arm them!…Then turn them loose on the Nazis!” It’s a movie so great that you can watch it again at 11 pm, after cleansing your palette with Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October at 8pm.Read More
