Field of Dreams, showing on AMC throughout the month of October, was nominated in
three categories at the 1989 Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Adapted
Screenplay and Best Original Score. It
didn’t win in any of them, but herewith, some suggestions for other honors due this fine and singular film.
Best use of a cornfield in a major
motion picture: Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) turns plowing land into playing
land. Blows M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs right out of the water and gives
Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest
a run for its money. (photo: (c) Universal/courtesy Everett collection)
Best guy-cry movie of all
time. The genre, testosterone’s answer
to the chick flick, is crowded with strong entries. "The Today Show" suggests Gladiator, Dead Poet’s Society and Saving
Private Ryan. "Entertainment Weekly"
adds The Shawshank Redemption, My Dog Skip and Brian’s Song. But Field of Dreams has baseball, manly mysticism
and unresolved daddy issues – the guy-cry trifecta.

Best reaction to an
When Kinsella knocks on author Terence Mann’s (James Earl Jones) door,
Mann growls, "I’m going to hit you with this crowbar until you go away."
Best patient, long-suffering wife:
Amy Madigan as Annie Kinsella. Annie
joins Beth Gallagher (Anne Archer, Fatal
Attraction), Vera Tucker (Joan Allen, Tucker:
The Man and His Dream), Alma Del Mar (Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain) and Vickie La Motta
(Cathy Moriarty, Raging Bull).
Best chance to actually feel like
a character in the film: visit the Lansing family farm in Dyersville, Iowa,
where the movie was shot. It’s free,
it’s open through November and it’s a fine place to consider why certain characters
in the film keep confusing Iowa with heaven.
