After writing my recent Give Alien 3 A Chance post — which I expect will result in more than a few people arching their eyebrow contemptuously in my direction and calling me an idiot — I decided to hit YouTube, check out some old clips of Alien 3 and just satisfy myself that I was not quite the buffoon that the vast majority of Alien series fans will no doubt make me out to be. Hi guys!
But I found something special while I was over there: the original trailer for Alien 3, released to theaters when the film was still in pre-production and obviously before the plot had been changed from the William Gibson version. The narrator reads: “In 1979, we discovered in space, no one can hear you scream. In 1992, we will discover on earth, everyone can hear you scream.”
There’s not much more to say, but it’s a fascinating little piece of Alien history. No wonder so many people were enraged: the first preview clearly promises Xenomorphs on Earth. Note to film executives: this is why you don’t release a preview before you’ve started filming your movie.
