There’s been some rumors among the sci-fi community for a while now that William Shatner would not be in the upcoming J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. Ostensibly, it made sense: this is a prequel movie, and they are recasting all the actors. However, there was a twist: Abrams’ had somehow managed to write Leonard Nimoy into the script… presumably through some flashback mechanism.
Now it looks like those rumors are confirmed. On a recent radio appearance, Shatner said…
There’s a new Star Trek movie, and I called Leonard [Nimoy], and I said, ‘Leonard! Have you heard?’ And he replied: ‘Yes, Bill, yes I have.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ and he said, ‘I read the script.’ Is it a good script?’ He said, ‘Yeah!’ I said, ‘Am I in it?’ and then there was a pause. He said no, and then he began to laugh. I went through the phone and I grabbed him by the throat. He’s in it and I’m not in it!
At this point, the radio host who is interviewing Shatner asks him why Nimoy didn’t refused to be in it if Shatner wasn’t given a role. “You’re friends!” the host insisted. Shatner laughs, “We’re not that good of friends.”
