A trailer for the upcoming Warner Bros. science-fiction flick The Invasion has just been released. And to be fair, it’s an exciting little preview of what looks to be a modern day remake of the familiar sci-fi staple, Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But is it?
Honestly, it’s pretty hard to know. The Invasion was green lit by Warner Bros’ in early 2004 as a remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers; they hired screenwriter Dave Kajganich to write the script. But a couple of years later, Warner Bros. had apparently decided that the film was different enough to be an entirely original concept.
From this trailer, it’s hard to see what’s so different. Sure, the pod people seem to have come to Earth on a crashed NASA space shuttle, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are pod people. They even seem to have retained the central existential terror of the book and movies: the insistence of the aliens that “you’ll feel exactly the same when you wake up.” But how could you? And if you did, wouldn’t that be worse?
I’m going to wait and see on this one. They’ve made two great movies out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (and one terrible one… thanks a lot, Abel Ferrara) so I’m not sure what to think when Warner Bros. disassociates their latest film with the exact same plot from the pedigree. And a cursory glimpse at the Invasion Wikipedia entry makes it clear that The Invasion has had a very troubled production.
I guess we’ll all know on August 17th.Read More
