Making of “The Cell” — Get an Up-Close Look at the Saviors’ Haunting Walker Fence

It turns out creating Negan’s walker-guarded compound is no easy task. Nor is dropping a walker out of the sky in a single take.

In a new video detailing the making of Episode 3, the cast and crew provide a behind-the-scenes look at the Sanctuary — also known as the place “where all the a**holes live,” according to Norman Reedus.

Go Behind the Scenes of “The Cell” With the Cast and Crew

A fence made of impaled walkers and spiked heads is a source of protection to Negan and his crew, as well as a source of fascination to to the cast. None other than Dwight (Austin Amelio) himself says, “I really like the walker fence… It’s really haunting.”

How, and how much, to show the Sanctuary wasn’t the only challenge the cast and crew faced when filming Season 7, Episode 3, “The Cell.”

When Dwight ventures outside the walls in search of a runaway Savior, walkers are no longer a source of protection but a threat. And that threat falls right off a bridge and on top of Dwight.

The airborne walker attack was no mere creation of CGI. Stunt Coordinator Monty Simons’ process for making the fall look realistic is actually far more complicated than that. (Hint: It involves a huge inflatable bed, no harness and keeping your arms “dead.”)
