The Badlands Has Been Turned Upside Down, and That’s Only the Beginning

In a new behind-the-scenes video, Executive Producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough wrap up a few of the larger arcs of the past season. “In Season 2 we dealt with lots of big themes,” says Millar. “Sunny coming back to the Badlands and getting redemption; revenge is a big theme as well; dealing with your ghosts.”

The creators also reminisce about the epic fights of the season. “I think my favorite fights were the Sunny/Moon fight in the chapel [in Episode 3]. It’s very much a Western,” Gough says, while Millar has a soft spot for the fight between M.K. and his “dark self.” in Episode 2. “I think it’s epic and cool,” he says.

Reflecting on his character’s journey, Daniel Wu says Sunny comes back this season more angry and driven, “but this season is a spiritual journey for him to question whether he can escape those tattoos that are on his back.” As for the “gut-wrenching” ending of the Season Finale, Wu says that “Sunny’s idea of a perfect family gets broken, so that leaves another cliff-hanger: What’s he gonna do next?”

Looking ahead to the expanded 16-episode third season, Millar says: “Season 2 has left all our characters in limbo. You don’t know quite what’s going to happen to them, or where they are, or what they’re gonna do, so Season 3 is wide open.”
