A Cheyenne Indian who converted to Christianity, Joseph studyied and preached under Reverend Cole, his adopted father. The clash between his new faith and cultural heritage was further complicated when he engaged in a romantic relationship with Cole’s daughter, Ruth, forcing him to face new and even more complex prejudices in Hell on Wheels. Joseph’s relationships with Ruth and Cole grew strained when the reverend’s mental state deteriorated. When Cole hijacked a train, Joseph visited him as a supposed ally and fatally stabbed him. He then left town to fast and pray in the wilderness.
