Video – Halt and Catch Fire‘s Title Defined

Wondering where AMC’s new original series Halt and Catch Fire got its name? This new video trailer defines the title, which describes a computer instruction that forces all commands to compete for control, causing the system to self-destruct. According to popular legend, engineers looking for faster processing speeds would increase the number of read/write currents in the machine’s wiring. This worked fine when the computer was executing normal programs, but the HALT instruction caused the wires to became so hot that they literally started to smoke — hence the instruction was labeled “Halt and Catch Fire.”

Halt and Catch Fire premieres Sunday, June 1 at 10/9c on AMC.
